Ok, so we all know by now that using reusuable nappies can save you some extra cash but what about saving a little more? Alongside cloth nappies I have made the choice to use washable wipes too - I found I was using one pack of disposable wipes a week and at around £1 a pack it was starting to add up.
Not only did it make financial sense but I felt a bit hypocritical using disposable wipes when my goal was to use cloth on Edward until he potty trains. I started looking around at what washable wipes were available again, as with cloth nappies they ranged in price and design but they all looked so soft and easy to use. I chose to make my own though, I marched myself off to Leicester Market where I found some reasonably priced fleece and chopped it up into wipe sized pieces, I could have sewn the pieces together with terry towelling for extra absorbancy but that was too much like hard work lol! The great thing about using them though is that I can put them into the washing machine with my nappies and all the hard work is done for me.
I noticed a lot of the packs of washable wipes on the market tended to include a solution to use on babys bum to clean it when wiping, I had been using just plain water (which did the trick) but found it had no nice smell like the disposable wipes, so again I went searching for what I could use at a cheaper cost. The answer surprised me........I found an internet discussion about what to use and a lot of people were suggesting a homemade solution of essential oils but then a few were suggesting Camomille tea! One lady even suggested a spray bottle to be filled with cold camomille tea and sprayed on to baby when they needed wiping - brilliant! I gave it a go and it ticked all my boxes, the smell was lovely, it was inexpensive and good for Edwards skin. Edward even finds it giggle worthy when he gets sprayed at his nappy changes and even better, it's natural! I make up a cup of camomille tea as if I were going to drink it and leave it to cool, then I pour it into my spray bottle (if you didn't want to use a spray you could use the solution to dampen your wipes and then pop them in a plastic container) then I'm ready to go! I found my spray bottle in a travel set (the kind where you can decant shampoo and conditioner into little bottles) and it's perfect!
