Nappy types

Some of you might be wondering what the best type of nappy is and which nappy will suit your baby - I don't have an answer to that one I'm afraid! I had to try a few different types to find what suited Edward and I'm not ashamed to say I had some accidents along the way!
I have found that as he grows his nappy needs have changed and some nappies that didn't suit him when he was newborn fit perfectly now and vice versa.

But I'll explain the main types to help you get an idea of what is available.

FLAT NAPPIES
Who remembers terry towelling nappies? Yes the ones with the huge pins and the plastic pants over the top!
Well that's this category, although things have moved on a great deal.
Flat nappies can come in a variety of absorbant materials, but are usually cotton or bamboo. A flat square of cloth that is either folded or pinned into place and then a wrap made from a waterproof material (usually Polyurethane laminate or PUL for short) is put over the top - the wraps come in lots of different prints and colours and fastenings (usually either velcro or poppers).
To fasten and secure the terry you can still use those big safety pins, but also on the market are ''Nappy Nippa's'' or ''Snappi's'' and these are T shaped stretchy type of rubber with little grippers on each end that grips the nappy, almost like a gripper rod!
These nappies will need to be washed after each use, however the wrap will only need to be washed once soiled or at the end of the day.

FITTED OR SHAPED NAPPIES
These nappies consist of a nappy that is shaped like a nappy - most commonly will be sized according to your baby's weight (as disposables are) and will look like a disposable with either a velcro or popper fastening. Some fitted/shaped nappies will also have no fastening so you can use the ''Nappy Nippa'' to fasten them.
I have seen many of this type of nappy without any waterproof barrier included, in this case a wrap would be needed as with flat nappies. I have also seen nappies with the waterproof barrier included so no wrap would be needed.
Again, with this type of nappy, you would need to wash after every use (wraps only if soiled or at the end of the day)

STUFFABLE OR POCKET NAPPIES
Stuffable or pocket nappies are perhaps the closest in design to a disposable nappy. They usually consist of a nappy shell made from a waterproof material with a stuffable pocket which you can stuff with an absorbant pad. The absorbant pad can be made from a variety of materials, cotton towelling, bamboo fibre, micro fibre or hemp. These nappies would need to be washed after every use and to do so just remove the absorbant pad from the shell.

BIRTH TO POTTY NAPPIES
These nappies are 'One size fits all' and fit the majority of babies from birth to potty training. They can be any of the above nappies, or wraps but are most commonly pocket or stuffable nappies that adjust to fit your baby.
